Root canal treatment isn’t just for adults. Some children may require a root canal to remove disease or decay within a tooth. Unlike root canals in years past, modern root canal therapy is quick and painless. Many patients and dentists alike compare a root canal to a dental filling.

At Valleau, VanDeven, and Massie Dentistry for Chidlren, our skilled and gentle team has years of experience performing root canals on baby teeth. Root canal treatment is an effective and safe way to eliminate tooth pain and save your child’s natural tooth from tooth loss, injury, or decay.

The Importance of Healthy Baby Teeth

Although baby teeth, also called primary teeth, are shed between ages 6 and 12, protecting your child’s primary tooth is still essential. Primary teeth have the same function as permanent or adult teeth. When a child is missing a tooth, it can lead to difficulties with eating and speech. Baby teeth also serve as guides for the permanent teeth’s proper placement. Without the guidance of primary teeth, permanent teeth can emerge in a crooked, crowded, or tilted position and result in bite problems. Crooked or malpositioned teeth can also require orthodontic treatment down the road.

How Does a Baby Root Canal Work?

As with every treatment at our dental office, we first ensure your child is comfortable and relaxed. We also offer laughing gas or a local numbing agent to calm their nerves and alleviate discomfort. If your child needs a root canal and already has a filling, the dentist will remove it and isolate the tooth with a comfortable oral barrier.

A barrier helps prevent saliva from entering the root canal and keeps your child from swallowing liquid or pieces of the tooth. Next, your children’s dentist carefully accesses the tooth’s root canal and gently removes the diseased pulp.

They will then sanitize and irrigate the tooth, fill the tooth roots, and seal it to protect it from further damage and bacteria. A root canal can save your child’s one-of-a-kind smile and helps promote the proper development of permanent teeth.
